Indeed, several DSM implementations work at the virtual-memory paging level: When an end user requests memory that is located elsewhere, a page fault occurs at the hardware level, causing the missing data to be fetched. To improve efficiency, some DSMs use data replication, where copies of data can be made on each participating computer. Replication systems are useful for shared data that is read-mostly. When the data is write-mostly, replication becomes counterproductive, because all the copies must be kept in sync after one is changed. Tuple spaces, such as those used in Linda5 for parallel processing, are architectures based on a DSM model. Tuples are sets of values that can be read/written from a common store. Some systems support access to DSM data at the language level. For example, Objective Linda6 and JavaSpaces7 have special message-like language constructs that can be used to read and write to DSM directly. JavaSpaces allows entire serialized Java objects to be read/written to DSM.

You use two initialization parameters to configure a flash recovery area: DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE: This parameter sets the maximum size of the flash recovery area. DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST: This parameter points to the location on disk of the flash recovery area. You must locate the flash recovery area on a disk separate from the database area, where you store the active database files such as datafiles, control files, and online redo logs. You have to specify DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE before you can specify DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. Here s how you would specify the two flash recovery area initialization parameters in your init.ora file: DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE = 10G DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST = '/u01/oradata/rcv_area' Note that the database doesn t allocate the amount of disk space set in DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_ SIZE to the flash recovery area immediately. Oracle will use this space only as the maximum limit on the flash recovery area size. Until new files necessitate the use of more space, the space is controlled by the operating system, although Oracle has assigned it to the flash recovery area.

Even if you don t specify a flash recovery area in the init.ora file or the SPFILE, you can use the ALTER SYSTEM statement to configure it while the instance is running. You can create and modify the flash recovery area dynamically using DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST and DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE as follows: SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET 2* DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE = 2G; System altered. SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET 2 DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST = '/u01/app/oracle/flashrec_area'; System altered. SQL> As noted earlier, you must set the DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE parameter first, before you set DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. Ensure that you have created the flash recovery area directory before you use DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. The SCOPE=BOTH clause makes sure that the changes you made are written permanently to the SPFILE. Use the ALTER SYSTEM command to make any changes to the flash recovery area after you create it.

Semaphores offer a high-performance way of firing events across thread or process boundaries on the same machine. Semaphores are operating-system kernel objects designed for process and thread synchronization. Contrary to other types of shared resources, semaphores are pure signaling mechanisms: They allow no data to be passed from sender to receiver. Since no data can be passed, there is no way to use a single semaphore directly for more than one type of event notification. Dutch computing pioneer Edsger Dijkstra first described semaphores, which use an internal counter to control process synchronization. The counter s value is intended to represent the number of available resources that the semaphore is coordinating access to. When there is only one resource, a binary semaphore can be used that restricts the counter values to 0 and 1. Semaphores support only two operations: signal and wait. Semaphores are initialized with the internal counter set to 0. A process that makes a resource available can call the signal operation, which increments the semaphore counter. A process that needs the resources can call the wait operation, which tests the counter value. If the value is greater than 0, it is decremented and the calling process continues to run. If the value is 0, the calling process is blocked until another process calls the semaphore s signal operation. Figure 3-10 shows a semaphore used to synchronize two processes.
